Irene A. Greer
August 25, 1925 — June 10, 2017
Irene Ann Greer, daughter of Leo and Cecelia (Zimmerman) Schmitz, was born August 25, 1925 in Westphalia, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. In high school, she played basketball and in September of 1941, she was recognized at the Iowa State Fair receiving champion honors in the “home efficiency division” of demonstration classes. She graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia.
After attending local dances, Irene met the love of her life. On April 12, 1945, she was united in marriage to Verle Earl Greer. Eight children were born to this union: Carolyn, Russell, Verlee, Cheryl, James, Jerry, Bobby Joe and Joseph. Irene stayed home to raise and care for her children and husband. She baby sat for some time and also catered for Mickel’s for approximately 25 years.
Irene was a loving mother and enjoyed time spent with her family. She was active in 4H, volunteered for St. Michael’s Guild and cooked for the children’s school lunch. She liked watching baseball on TV and square dancing.
Irene died on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, attaining the age of ninety-one years, nine months and sixteen days. In addition to her parents, Irene was preceded in death by her sons Bobby Joe and Joseph, brothers Leonard A. Schmitz and Leland Schmitz.
She has left to cherish her memory, her husband of seventy-two years Verle Greer of Harlan, Iowa; children Carolyn and her husband Jerry Droszcz of Winfield, Illinois; Russell Greer and his wife Tami of Grinnell, Iowa; Verlee and her husband Steve Terwilliger of Valencia, California; Cheryl and her husband Paul LaRue of Minneapolis, Minnesota; James Greer and his wife Christina of Boulder, Colorado; Jerry Greer and his wife Laurie of San Jose, California; eleven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren with one on the way; other family members and friends.
A 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. John Frost on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Julie Pickard and Cathy Fuller served as honorary casket bearers. Butch Greer, Jon Terwilliger, Ben Greer, Isabella Greer, Mike Droszcz, Alex Greer, Foster Greer, Kyle Terwilliger and Zach Greer served as casket bearers. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
