Irene W. Mahlberg

Irene W. Mahlberg was born on April 1, 1924, to Nickolas and Agnes (Kenkel) Leinen in Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph�s Catholic Church in Earling and graduated from St. Joseph�s Catholic School.
On November 20, 1944, she was united in marriage to Joseph "Bud" Mahlberg. Eleven children were born to this union: Sandra, Darrell, Randy, Terry, Karen, David, Becky, Joe, Jane, Jim, and Kelly.
Irene cleaned the Little White School House, worked at Head Start and the Earling meal site, and read meters.
Her hobbies included attending her children�s and then her grandchildren�s ball games and school activities. She also enjoyed bingo, ceramics, playing cards, and watching baseball. She was a die hard Cubs fan.
Irene died on Sunday, December 18, 2011, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-seven years, eight months, and seventeen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and three brothers: LaVerne, Leo, and Nick.
She is survived by her children: Sandra Mahlberg of Harlan, Iowa, Darrell Mahlberg and his wife Elizabeth of Charter Oak, Iowa, Randy Mahlberg and his wife Linda of Sloan, Iowa, Terry Mahlberg of Anchorage, Alaska, Karen and her husband David Jones of Council Bluffs, Iowa, David Mahlberg and his wife Lois of Denison, Iowa, Becky and her husband Tim Haas of Omaha, Nebraska, Joe Mahlberg, Jr., and his wife Kathy of Earling, Iowa, Jane and her husband Larry Boettger of Denison, Jim Mahlberg and his wife Andrea of Neola, Iowa, and Kelly Mahlberg and his wife Penny of Earling; twenty-four grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Lavina Blum of Dunlap, Iowa, Cecelia Buckley of Earling, Alfred Leinen and his wife Joan of Earling, Marcella and her husband Kenneth Dillemuth of Pahrump, Nevada, Rose Mary Rehberg of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Ed Leinen and his wife Carol of Harlan; sisters-in-law Estelle Leinen of Dow City, Iowa, Margie Leinen of Omaha, and Bernadette Leinen of Dunlap; other family members and friends.
Rev. Chris Fontanini celebrated the 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at St. Joseph�s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Jason Mahlberg, Bob Mahlberg, Chad Mahlberg, Chris Mahlberg, Chuck Jones, Ryan Haas, Kevin Mahlberg, Scott Boettger, Brett Boettger, Nathan Mahlberg, Noah Mahlberg, Alex Mahlberg, and Nic Mahlberg. Serving as casket bearers were Darrell Mahlberg, Randy Mahlberg, Terry Mahlberg, David Mahlberg, Joe Mahlberg, Jim Mahlberg, and Kelly Mahlberg. Interment was held at St. Joseph�s Cemetery in Earling, Iowa.
