Irene Tremel
August 22, 1930 — July 13, 2017
Irene Catherine (Graf) Tremel was born August 22, 1930 in Harlan, Iowa to Anton and Helen (Book) Graf. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan and was a member there until she was married. Being a woman of strong faith, Irene has been a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa since 1950 and was a member of the Altar Society. She went to Harlan Public School and after Normal Training, she taught at a Harlan country school, Lincoln #5, just west of Harlan.
Irene married Joseph Tremel on June 26, 1950 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan and to this union, six children were born. She and Joe were privileged to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary together. Irene became a full-time homemaker and loved taking care of her family. She and Joe enjoyed farming the Tremel Century Farm west of Earling. Irene always had a vegetable garden, and loved growing flowers, especially African Violets. She delighted in canning, baking, and cooking for her family and never missed a chance to watch her grandchildren. Irene also enjoyed sewing, needlework, quilting, traveling, and loved to go square dancing. For many years, Joe and Irene enjoyed wood crafting and going to craft fairs.
Irene went to be with the Lord on July 13, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. She attained the age of 86 years, 10 months, and 21 days. In addition to her parents, Irene is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; brother Ralph Graf; sisters Alice McGee, Agnes Miller, Sr. Mary Estelle Graf RSM, Frances Tremel, Mary Graeve, and Catherine Heese.
She is survived by her children Marvin (Marguerite) Tremel of Dunlap, IA; Mike (Mary) Tremel of Earling, IA; Ron (Kathy) Tremel of Earling, IA; Ann (Gary) Blum of Earling, IA; Marcene Tremel of Earling, IA; Monica (Greg) Stinn of Dunlap, IA; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister Helen Bruck of Harlan, IA; brothers-in-law Vince Heese of Earling; Leonard (Mary Pat) Tremel of Earling; Charles (Bonnie) Tremel of Omaha; Kenneth (Betty) Tremel of Panama; Ralph (Elaine) Tremel of Panama; sister-in-law Helen Frederick of Earling; a large extended family and friends.
