Irma Elsie Hansen Kock was born the daughter of L. Chris and Anna (Christiansen) Hansen on a farm west and south of Avoca, Iowa. As a youngster, Irma delivered milk for her father’s dairy company, Springdale Dairy, in Avoca and as a young woman was also crowned Miss Avoca. She went to Avoca High School and graduated with the class of 1940. She was honored to be the first recipient of the J.W. Davis Citizenship Award.

Irma attended A.I.B. Business College in Des Moines, Iowa and returned to work at the Citizens Savings Bank in Avoca. During the war she worked at the Naval Air Station on North Island San Diego, California as a clerk typist. When she returned to Avoca, she worked at Iowa Power and Light Company until her marriage to LaVerne Kock.

LaVerne and Irma were married at English Lutheran Church in Avoca on September 15, 1946. To this union four children were born: Larry, Connie, Kathy, and Carol. They made their home on the Kock family farm raising their children and registered Angus cattle near Avoca until 2002. Irma helped LaVerne with the farm chores by milking cows and raising chickens. Irma enjoyed spending her free time gardening, being an active 4-H leader, 500 Club (neighborhood card club), Ladies Aid, and member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca. Irma was known to be one of the first women in Shelby County to own a microwave.

Irma died October 28, 2016 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa having attained ninety-three years, eleven months, and twenty-five days. She is preceded in death by her parents; brother Harold Hansen; sisters Bernice Jacobsen and Agnes Gronborg; son-in-law Robert Tompkins; and grandson Austin Tompkins.

She is survived by her husband LaVerne Kock of Avoca; son Larry Kock and his wife Kathleen of Walnut, Iowa; daughters Connie and her husband Tod Mongan of Frisco, Texas; Kathy Tompkins of Greenfield, Indiana; and Carol and her husband Steve Vinton of Glenwood, Iowa; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and friends.
