Isidore Leonard Schwarte was born on February 9, 1913, to Herman and Rose (Lehan) Schwarte in Earling, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph�s Catholic Church in Earling and attended grade school and high school at St. Joseph�s Catholic School in Earling.
Isidore enlisted in the United States Army in March of 1941, serving during World War II as a truck driver and as a driver for a general. He was stationed for a time in Kodiak, Alaska. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and the American Theater Ribbon before his honorable discharge from service in November of 1945. He served a total of four years, five months, and thirteen days.
On January 21, 1943, Isidore was united in marriage to Meritta Hendricks at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Robert, Shirley, and Tami.
Isidore farmed north of Harlan for several years. During this time, he and Meritta enjoyed going to dances, especially polkas, with their friends. They also liked to get together with friends and play cards.
Isidore was the manager of the Harlan City Roller Mill where they produced rolled oats for livestock. He remained at the mill until his retirement. After his retirement, he mowed lawns until he had his heart attack in 1992. He went to California in January of 2005, where he lived with his son for a year and a half.
He then returned to his home in June of 2006 and lived in his own home. He was admitted to Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan on February 6, 2007. He went home on February 12, 2007. He was re-admitted to Myrtue on February 19th and stayed until March 15th when he was discharged to Little Flower Haven in Earling, Iowa. On March 19th, he was transferred to Creighton Medical Center. From that point, he stayed at Creighton until March 28th when he was transferred back to Little Flower Haven.
It was there that he died on March 29, 2007, having attained the age of ninety-four years, one months, and twenty days. Isidore was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of sixty years, Meritta Schwarte, his four brothers: Joseph, Frank, Wilford, and Henry, and one sister, Quirina Bauman.
Isidore is survived by his son Robert Schwarte of Huntington Beach, California; his daughters: Shirley Welker of Harlan, Iowa and Tami and her husband William Stinn of Westphalia, Iowa; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his sister Rosetta Hendricks of Harlan, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, April 3, 2007 with Rev. Bob Hoefler conducting the 11:00 AM service at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Ron Kleffman, Albert Schwarte, Ralph Bauman, Larry Welker, Richard Schwarte, Joe Schwarte, Jr., and Gene Hendricks. Military rites were held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa, by Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 and Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150.
