Ivo Albert Finken was born October 22, 1926 in Earling, Iowa to Cecilia (Heese) and Anton Finken. He was baptized, made his first communion and confirmed in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School, graduating with the class of 1944.
He entered the Army in World War II in 1945 and 18 months later was honorably discharged.
He was married to Mildred Dresen in 1951 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. To this union four children were born, Donna, Dean, Darlene and Douglas.
From 1942 - 1964 he worked for Joe Wilwerding, owner of Wilwerding Auto Craft as a mechanic. He purchased the business and named it Finken Auto Machine Shop which he owned for 30 years.
In the past he was Earling’s Fire Chief and Legion Commander for several years. He was also president of the Business Mens Club and in 1978 was voted, Business Man of the Year.
He enjoyed the casinos, horse and dog races, collecting coins, wood whittling, cracking and cleaning walnuts, peeling potatoes, washing dishes, and doing magic tricks. He loved the summer garden season and all the fresh vegetables. He could fix anything and everything. His sense of humor was enjoyed by many and the happiest moments were when the grandchildren and great grandchildren were near him.
Ivo died on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 surrounded by his loving family at Little Flower Haven in Earling, attaining the age of ninety-one years, ten months and six days. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Mildred, sisters Irene Goeser, Vera Muenchrath, Edith Schneider, Doris Schneider, Marie Ebert and Theoletta in infancy, brothers Sylvester, Austin, Dennis, and Tony Jr in infancy.
Left to cherish his memory are his children Donna Stephens of Denison, Iowa; Dean Finken and his wife Sandy of Earling, Iowa; Darlene and her husband Don Mages of Panama, Iowa; Douglas Finken and his special friend Nancy Caylor of Altoona, Iowa; 8 grandchildren 15 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Lois Dresen of Earling, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
