Jack was born on the family farm near Harlan, Iowa (Lincoln Township) to John and Hazel (Carlyle) Claussen. He attended Lincoln Township School #8 and graduated from Harlan Community High School in 1942. After high school he farmed with his parents. He served in the Army from 1945 until his honorable discharge in 1946. After discharge he continued to farm and was united in marriage to Rita Weihs on August 17, 1953. They made their home in rural Harlan and had eight children: Jackie, Jeff, Liz, Kathy, John, Jim, Jay and Tom. He farmed until he retired in 1989. Jack and Rita then enjoyed spending winters in Florida, Texas and Arizona and spending summers at Lake Okoboji. Outside of farming Jack enjoyed time with family, history, reading and fishing. Jack passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital on October 4, 2024 having attained the age of 99 years and 11 months. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents and brother Dean. He is survived by his children Jackie (Garlyn) Major, Jeff Claussen, Liz (Mark) McKeever all of Council Bluffs, Kathy Claussen of Boynton Beach, Florida, John (Kim) Claussen of Des Moines, IA, Jim (Connie) Claussen of Harlan, Jay Claussen of Littleton, CO and Tom Claussen of Harlan; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
