Jack E. Gaskill

Jack was born on a farm east of Hamlin in Audubon County on November 10, 1921 to Oscar and Margaret (Anderson) Gaskill. He attended school at country school near Hamlin and later in Gray, Iowa.
Jack met his wife, Opal Richards, in Irwin, Iowa. They were later married in Springfield, Nebraska on February 27, 1943. Three children were born to this union: Lynn, Judy, and Kathy. After their wedding, the couple moved to a farm east of Irwin and eventually moved to the Gaskill home farm, which is a Century Farm today. Their grandson Greg Gaskill now resides on the family farm.
After retiring in 1983 from the farm, Jack and Opal moved to their home in Irwin where he did beautiful woodworking. He made a large entertainment center and many craft items. Jack enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and taking them to the Country Store for ice cream and candy.
Jack was an early riser even after retiring he would go to the Country Store for coffee with the guys at 4:30 AM. He also enjoyed fishing at Lake View and he especially enjoyed going fishing in the Dakotas and Canada.
Jack became a resident of the Manilla Manor on May 4, 2005. It was there that he died on Monday, November 19, 2007 having attained the age of eighty-six years and nine days. Jack is preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Opal of Irwin, Iowa; his children: Lynn and his wife Myrna of Manilla, Iowa; Judy Fenster of Kansas City, Missouri; and Kathy and her husband Jerry Luetje of Ankeny, Iowa; eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren; and one brother Bob Gaskill and his wife Kay of Iowa City, Iowa and one sister-in-law June and her husband Walter Murray of Irwin, Iowa.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, November 21, 2007, at the Church of Christ in Irwin, Iowa. Rev. Ted Sieck performed the 10:30 AM service with burial at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Irwin, Iowa with Lyle Shepard, Ronnie Gaskill, Clinton Kienast, and Kent Richards serving as honorary casket bearers. Serving as active casket bearers were: Shane Gaskill, Greg Gaskill, Chris Fenster, Jarad Gaskill, Corey Gaskill, and Chad Gaskill.
