Jacob Alan Hartvigsen was born on July 22, 1994 to Kevin and Tracy (Mortensen) Hartvigsen in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton where he remained a lifelong member. While in high school, he played golf, participated in speech, and belonged to All Strings Attached for the Carroll area symphony, where he played in the pit orchestra for a production of Annie. He was in drama, doing productions of Footloose, The Wizard of Oz, and Damn Yankees. He graduated from Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton High School as valedictorian of the Class of 2013 and had started his third year at Simpson College in Indianola.
Jacob started taking piano lessons when he was in third grade. When he was able to start band in fifth grade, he took up the trumpet and never put it down. By the time he was in junior high school, he knew he wanted to be a music teacher. He was a member of the Southwest Iowa Honor Band in junior and senior high school as well as a member of the Honor Choir of Southwest Iowa, Southwest Iowa Marching Band, and was awarded 1A first chair when he tried out for Jazz All-State Band. While attending Simpson on a music scholarship, he was active in the pep band, concert band, orchestra, and his favorite, jazz band, played for the opera, and was a member of the Lamba Chi Alpha fraternity and the Iowa Bandmaster’s Association.
When most kids his age had their eyes on a specific car or truck, Jacob had his eye on a special trumpet. When he wasn’t studying or playing his trumpet, he was hanging out with his girlfriend or friends and would most always be playing his favorite video game, League of Legends.
Jacob was diagnosed with a brain tumor in October of 2015. After surgeries and radiation therapy to fight the cancer, it returned in January. He died on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, at the age of twenty-one years, six months, and twenty-nine days. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, George Hartvigsen.
He is survived by his parents, Kevin and Tracy Hartvigsen of Audubon, Iowa; sisters Michaela Hartvigsen and Amy Hartvigsen both of Audubon; maternal grandparents Lynn and Julie Mortensen of Kimballton, Iowa; paternal grandmother Sharon Hartvigsen; other family members; girlfriend Sage Lenertz of Hampton, Iowa; fraternity brothers; and numerous friends in the communities that he had lived in.
