James Dewey Conrad, son of Arthur and Toy (Erickson) Conrad, was born on June 17, 1925, in Harlan, Iowa. He attended country school outside of Harlan and helped his father on the family farm.

On January 4, 1945, Dewey volunteered for the Merchant Marines and served during World War II. He continued to serve until May 2, 1947.

On October 9, 1950, Dewey enlisted in the United States Army at Omaha, Nebraska. He served overseas during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on September 20, 1952, at Fort Custer, Michigan, having attained the rank of Master Sergeant and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal.

On January 4, 1954, Dewey was united in marriage to Ruby Ellen Bassinger in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Four children were born to this union. After their wedding, Dewey and Ruby made their home outside of Harlan, where Dewey was employed at Western Engineering. Throughout the years, Dewey worked as a truck foreman, equipment operator and asphalt plant foreman.

Dewey died on Thursday, December 3, 2009, having attained the age of eighty-four years, five months, and sixteen days. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruby; his daughter, Connie; and his brothers: Victor, Alvin, Merwin, Thomas, and Kenneth.

He is survived by his children: Victor Conrad and his wife Alice; Tim Conrad and his wife Kelli; Kim Conrad all of Harlan, Iowa; Colleen and her husband James Thompson of LeMars, Iowa; and Brenda Conrad of Harlan; nine grandchildren: John, Sheila, James, Amanda, Justin, Lance, Megan, Michael, and Erik; nine great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.

Funeral Services were held on Monday, December 7, 2009, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Rev. Dr. David G. Swinton, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Harlan, officiated the 1:00 PM service. Military Rights were held at the Harlan Cemetery by the Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 and the Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150. Acting as honorary casket bearers were: Vern Daeges, Mike Davidson, Gary Gubbels, Kevin Krohn, Cal Peterson, Darold Wittrup, and Allen Schneider. Serving as casket bearers were: James Conrad, John Fiebelkorn, Lance Conrad, Mandy Hanover, Erik Thompson, Justin Conrad, Sheila Conrad, Michael Thompson, and Megan Hersom.
