James Franklin Havick was born on March 8, 1944 to Elmer and Wilma (Amderson) Havick in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He grew up on the farm right outside of Avoca and attended AvoHa High School where he was active in sports and 4-H activities. He went on to graduate from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
After his schooling, he enlisted in the National Guard. He received an honorable discharge and returned to the family farm. He was united in marriage to Margene Keating. Two boys were born to this union: Scott and Shane.
He worked throughout the United States and Canada for the Bekent Steel Wire Company and later for various seed companies including Garst and DeKalb.
In March of 1980, he was united in marriage to Darlene Peterson Stotts. He spent his free time fishing and riding motorcycles and loved spending time with his grandchildren and his dog, Mickey.
James spent twenty-one years working with Farm Bureau in Clay Center, Kansas. In 2005, he retired and returned to settle in Shenandoah, Iowa where he lived until his death on Thursday, January 5, 2012. He had attained the age of sixty-seven years, nine months, and twenty-nine days. He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Wilma and a step-daughter Pam Kasl.
He is survived by his wife Darlene Havick of Shenandoah, Iowa; sons Scott Havick and his wife Brenda of Altoona, Iowa, and Shane Havick and his wife Amy of Norwalk, Iowa; step-children Julie and her husband Roger McQueen on Shenandoah, Iowa, Diana and her husband Dan Dix of Humboldt, Iowa, Lourie and her husband Steve Petsche of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Doug Stotts of College Springs, Iowa; son-in-law Rob Kasl of Belleville, Kansas; six grandchildren; fifteen step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; brothers: Bruce Havick and his wife Kay of Harlan, Iowa and Steven Havick and his wife Jill of Urbandale, Iowa; other family members and friends.
Pastor Steve Hetzel officiated the 10:00 AM funeral service on Monday, January 9, 2012 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Scott Havick, Shane Havick, Doug Stotts, Tim Houge, Chuck Hanson, and Carl Michael. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
