James "Jim" Emery Juhl was born July 3, 1929 to Axel and Elsie (Green) Juhl on the family farm west of Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Harlan Lutheran church, he had been a member of the Shelby United Lutheran Church for the last 45 years. Jim graduated from Tennant High School in 1946 at the age of 16. He then attended the Commercial Extension trade school in Omaha, Nebraska where he studied business and accounting. In 1951, Jim was drafted into the United States Marines during the Korean War, serving two years in California before receiving his Honorable Discharge. It was during this time in the Marines that his passion for antiques Caterpillars was created, which he would then carry on throughout his lifetime.
Jim met the love of his life, Monna Peterson, in 1954. The two dated for a year before being married at the Harlan Lutheran Church on August 28, 1955. Jim and Monna have two sons: Jeff and Jerry. They raised their family west of Tennant before buying the family farm in 1966. Jim took care of the family by farming, which was his passion. Jim and Monna took care of the family farm until 2005, when Jim retired and they moved to Shelby. Jerry moved to the family farm, and took over the farming. Jim still loved overseeing the farming operation although retired, and continued to help as much as he could. Jim was very active at Carsten's Farm in Shelby and attended this event every year since starting.
Jim's hobby was collecting antique Caterpillar machinery and restoring old farm equipment. He also loved to golf and was part of the Avoca Golf Team for several years. He also loved deep sea fishing and traveling. Jim and Monna would travel in their RV and had visited all of the states west of the Mississippi River, they even ventured through Canada, stopping at Niagara Falls. Another passion of Jim and Monna's was putting flags on the Veterans's graves around Memorial day in the Shelby Cemetery. They had the honor of keeping this tradition for the last 37 years. Jim was an active member of Shelby American Legion Post #240 for 40 years, a proud accomplishment for him.
Jim's family would say his favorite hobbies were drinking coffee and telling stories. He especially loved his grandchildren, being able to tell them his stories and sharing with them his special memories. He was able to teach his grandchildren how to drive tractors and how to play pitch, one of the card games he loved.
Jim passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2018 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was 88 years, six months, and 10 days. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother in law.
