James Franklin Slater was born at Denison, Iowa, March 28, 1925, the son of Carl and Hattie Groth Slater. After completing his education in the rural schools he farmed with his father. On February 14, 1948, Jim was united in marriage with Dorothy Greder at Carroll, Iowa. Their union was blessed with five children, Dennis, Steven, Becky, Tom and Curt. After farming for a time, Jim began his lifetime trucking career with Comstock Sand and Gravel and later was employed with Huebner Trucking where he did piggyback trucking. He then became an independent trucker, hauling grain and livestock, from which he retired at age 62. Jim spent his retirement years in Denison where he enjoyed his hobby of fishing when health permitted, and in earlier years, was a member of the saddle club and enjoyed horse shows. Jim died Friday, November 5, 2010, at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of his death he had been blessed with 85 years, 7 months and 7 days. Including his parents, Carl and Hattie Slater, Jim was also preceded in death by one son: Tom Slater; two brothers: Bob and George Slater; and one sister, Maxine Clinton. Those remaining to cherish his memory include his wife of 62 years: Dorothy Slater of Denison, Iowa; four children: Dennis Slater and wife, Sandy of Denison, Iowa; Steven Slater and family of Dow City, Iowa; Becky and husband, Jim Randol of Dow City, Iowa; and Curt Slater and girls of Defiance, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; one brother: Charlie Slater of Denison, Iowa; two sisters: Carol Brus of Denison, Iowa; and Florence Kennedy of Anaheim, California; other relatives and friends. A visitation was held at the Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Monday, November 8, 2010.
