Janet S. Christensen
April 11, 1941 — July 23, 2010
Janet Sue Christensen, daughter of Max and Evelene (Lengeman) Sander, was born on April 11, 1941 in Carroll, Iowa. Janet’s family later moved to the Elk Horn, Iowa area where she attended school at the Elk Horn Community Schools and graduated with the high school class of 1959.
While in high school, Janet was set up on a blind date with a young Harlan gentleman by the name of Gerald "Chris" Christensen. On September 6, 1959, Janet and Gerald were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church and while on their honeymoon suffered eleven flat tires. After their marriage and a few short moves around Shelby County, Janet and "Chris" made their home in Harlan and were blessed with the birth of three children: Tamara, Timothy and Troy. Janet was a stay at home mom while her children were young but later started working at Variety Distributors in Harlan where she remained employed for over thirty-three years until her retirement in 2007.
Janet was a loving wife and mother who adopted three very loving neighborhood children that she loved as her own special grandchildren, Logan Haynes and Quentin and Kaylie Briggs. She was a kind hearted strong Christian who helped anyone in need from baking them a fresh loaf of bread to opening her own home. In addition to baking and cooking, Janet loved quilting and gave several of her creations to her family and friends. She and Gerald also spent countless hours together constructing intricate doll houses with beautiful handmade details.
Janet died on July 23, 2010 at the Jennie Edmundson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa having attained the age of sixty-nine years, three months and twelve days. In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her daughter, Tamara.
She is survived by her husband Gerald "Chris" Christensen of Harlan; her sons: Timothy Christensen and his friend Tammy Caldwell of Earling, Iowa and Troy Christensen and his friend Maryann Brown of Phoenix, Arizona; her brother, Jim Sander and his friend Doris of Little Sioux, Iowa; her sister, Kathy and her husband Dean Koster of Harlan; her special grandchildren Logan Haynes and Quentin and Kaylie Briggs and their parents Jeremy and Jaime Briggs of Harlan; her sisters-in-law: Carolyn Christensen of Portsmouth, Virginia, Carolyn and her husband Kenny Hursey of Harlan, Cheryl and her husband Leon Hansen of Jacksonville, Iowa and Char and her husband John McKeighan of Beebeetown, Iowa; nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
