Janet Freeman Profile Photo
Janet Marie Freeman was born June 14, 1933, to Leonard and Helen (Kohler) Engel in Kewanee, Illinois. The family later moved to East Moline, Illinois. The house in East Moline was something she and her siblings constantly reminisced. After her dad passed away at an early age her mother returned the family to Kewanee, where Janet finished grade school and graduated from Kewanee High School in 1951. She married LeRoy Junis, February 27, 1953. Four children were born to this union: Mary Jo, Michael, Martin, and Mitchell. After LeRoy’s death in 1981, she married Larry Freeman. They were married just short of 35 years.

After the youngest started school, Janet worked at Eagle Foods. When she and Larry retired, she enjoyed going to Florida in January. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, going to their sporting, church and school events. She taught all her grandchildren and older great-grandchildren how to play the card game Up & Down. She was always up for a game and some of her happiest moments were spent around the kitchen table playing with them and all her extended family. She also enjoyed trips to the casino. In 1995, with health issues arising, Janet and Larry moved to Iowa to be closer to her daughter.

Janet died Saturday, December 17, 2016, at Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-three years. Her parents preceded Janet in death; also, husband LeRoy and sister Connie Laschanzky. She is survived by her husband Larry Freeman of Avoca, Iowa; daughter Mary Jo and her husband Peter Hall of Avoca; sons Michael Junis and his wife Jean of Iowa City, Iowa; Martin Junis and his wife Deborah of McLean, Illinois; and Mitchell Junis and his wife Margie of Bloomington, Illinois; ten grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; sister Jane Egert of Warrenville, Illinois; brother John Engel and his wife Bonnie of Bettendorf, Iowa; brother-in-law Barry Freeman and his wife Janet of Sullivan, Illinois; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
