Janice Marilyn Schultz was born on November 11, 1935 to John and Hazel (Martin) Thorson in Estherville, Iowa. She grew up in Armstrong, Iowa, where her parents owned and operated The Corner Hardware Store. She attended elementary and high school there, starring in basketball, a sport which she loved. She graduated from Armstrong High School with the Class of 1953. She often spent her summers on the south shore of Spirit Lake with her aunt, Mabel Okers.
Jan attended Iowa State University where she met Roy, her husband of fifty-two years, in speech class. They were married on August 24, 1958. She graduated from college in 1959, interned at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and became a registered Medical Technologist. She worked at the Iowa State University Hospital until Roy graduated from veterinary school and worked briefly in Harlan before their three children, Gary, Kathryn, and Kent, were born.
In 1960, Jan and Roy moved to Avoca where Roy was associated in veterinary practice with Dr. Robert Wunder. Jan worked briefly at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan but soon turned to raising the family and answering the clinic phone when the vets were in the country and after hours. She later worked in the vaccine laboratory in Avoca, producing a vaccine for pneumonia of swine which she had helped Roy to develop.
Jan was involved in many community organizations: PEO, the Avoca Library Board, and Federated Womens Club, where she was instrumental in establishing the Avoca Meals on Wheels program which she headed for twenty-five years. She was active in the Presbyterian United Church of Avoca serving as Elder, Secretary, and choir member. She was involved in the Presbytery serving on the Committee on Ministry helping congregations of Southwest Iowa fill vacant pulpits. She went through training and was a Stephens Minister, helping people through periods of stress in their lives.
Jan was able to travel with Roy early in his consulting career to places like Japan, China, New Zealand, Europe, and Africa. She enjoyed it but later preferred to stay home to spend time with her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, and work in her yard and garden, which she thoroughly enjoyed. For several years she worked in the Avoca School System and listened to the second graders read.
Jan entered eternal rest on Thursday, July 29, 2010 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-four years, eight months, and eighteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother John Thorson, Jr., sister-in-law Bernice Lee, and brother-in-law Wilbur Carroll.
Left to cherish Jans memory is her husband Dr. Roy Schultz of Avoca, Iowa; her children: Dr. Gary Schultz and his wife Taylor Nagengast of Avoca, Kathryn Schultz of Mission Viejo, California, and Kent Schultz and his wife LaVerne of Plano, Texas; grandchildren: Dagny, Henry, Mary, Anne, and Grace of Avoca, and Reed and Emily from Plano, Texas; sisters-in-law Dorothy Carroll of Harlan, Iowa and Lee Thorson of Chanhassen, Minnesota; brother-in-law Ivan Lee of Harlan; other family members and many friends.
