Jean Ruth Hemminger, daughter of Clifton and Emelia (Scott) Christensen, was born April 7. 1923 in Fiscus, Shelby County, Iowa. She was baptized in 1936 at Bethel Baptist Church. She attended rural school then graduated from Harlan High School. Jean attended normal training through Peru State in Nebraska, she taught country school near Corley, Iowa for 3 years.
On July 4, 1943, Jean was united in marriage to Wilbert “Webb” Hemminger at the Army Chapel in Springfield, Missouri. After Webb’s return from the service, the couple farmed two miles south of Corley where they raised their three sons: Dennis, Dale and Dwayne. In 1962, the family moved to Harlan. Jean worked at Variety Distributors for a few years, then was the bookkeeper at Petersen Gas for over 35 years.
Jean was a member of First Baptist Church in Harlan. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and always had a special treat for her grandchildren. Jean and Webb also enjoyed traveling by motor home, and spending time at their cabin on Black Hawk Lake in Lake View, Iowa. After the death of Webb in 2003, she remained in her home in Harlan.
Jean died on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa, attaining the age of ninety-nine years, six months, and eleven days. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son Dale Hemminger, daughter-in-law B.J. Hemminger, sister Bernadine Gaer.
She is survived by her sons Dennis (Angie) Hemminger of Blair, Nebraska; Dwayne Hemminger of Harlan, Iowa; daughter-in-law Pat Hemminger of Harlan, IA; grandchildren: Seth Hemminger, Corrine Steele, Heather Claussen, Reid Hemminger, Holly Hemminger, and Shad Hemminger, 12 great grandchildren; brother Donald Christensen of Walnut, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
