Jean Ione (Maassen) Schroeder, the daughter of Reimer Maassen and Wilma (Peters) Maassen, was born on December 7, 1929 at Harlan, Iowa. She attended primary school classes in a one-room school in Lincoln Township and graduated from Harlan High School in 1947. She was employed at the Harlan National Bank in Harlan, Iowa prior to her marriage.
On November 25, 1949, Jean was united in marriage to Dexter Adolph Schroeder at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Judy, Nancy, Jane and David. After their marriage, the couple lived on a farm south of Audubon and then moved to a farm in Walnut, Iowa. In 1955, the couple moved to the Maassen Family Farm.
Jean was a homemaker and loved to cook and bake. She was known of wonderful lunches for neighbors when they came over to shell corn or put up hay as well as delectable dishes for family holidays and gatherings. In 1968, she began working in Harlan, Iowa first for the Tractor Supply Store and then for the Spurgeon's Department Store; which was from the day the store opened until 25 years later when the store closed. She was an active member of the Congregational Church and served on many committees. She was also a member of the Lincoln Township Social Club and VFW Ladies Auxillary.
Jean died on Friday, August 18, 2023, at the Nye Legacy in Fremont, Nebraska having attained the age of ninety three years, eight months and twelve days. In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband Dexter; daughter Jane D. Burger; sister Marilyn Lou Petersen, brother-in-law LeRoy Peterson, and brother-in-law Robert Gustafson.
Survivors include her daughter Judith A. Schroeder of Omaha, Nebraska; daughter Nancy L. (Tim) Peterson of West Point, Nebraska; son David A (Lisa) Schroeder of Woodbury, Minnesota; son-in-law Terry Burger of Las Vegas, Nevada; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sister LuAnn Gustafson of Apple Valley, Minnesota; other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers family suggest memorials be made to the family for a memorial to be determined at a later date.
