Jeanette Schechinger Chipman, was born December 2, 1929 in Westphalia, Iowa, to Valentine Sr. and Martha (Schmitz) Schechinger, the seventh of eight children. She attended country school for two years and finished her education at St. Boniface Catholic school. Before graduating in 1948, Jeanette enjoyed playing basketball and going to dances. One night at a dance in Defiance, Jeanette met Raymond Chipman.
Raymond Chipman proposed to Jeanette on December 24, 1950, just before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. They were united in marriage on February 4, 1952 and were blessed to be together for 70 years. They had a son, James, and adopted their daughter Sheryl 10 years later.
Jeanette worked for Dr L.V. Larsen at his home, assisting with the care of children, cooking and other household duties. In 1953 she and Jim joined Ray who was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii. They returned to Harlan in October of 1954, where Jeanette worked at St. Michael's school making lunch for the students while Ray resumed work at Shelby County State Bank. They were both active members of St. Michael's Catholic Church, where they found many cherished friendships. For 21 years, she co-led the funeral dinner program. In 1969, she found fun, and friendship every fall picking apples for the Brickyard Orchard for 21 years.
Jeanette cherished time with her family, children and grandchildren, as well as her siblings, nieces, and nephews. She had a heart and a gift for nurturing children and loved babysitting for friends and neighbors. She was a talented cook and baker and loved entertaining and gathering loved ones around her table to share a meal. To know Jeanette was to never leave her house without at least a bite of one of her many fantastic dishes. Her cinnamon rolls, angel food cake, banana bars, bread, pies, and Christmas goodies brought great joy to her, and to all that she shared them with.
Jeanette passed away on January 30, 2022, at the age of 92, with her devoted husband Ray and children at her side.
Jeanette is survived by her husband, Ray and children: Jim (Becky) Chipman of Harlan; Sheryl (Rex) Rinker of West Des Moines, IA.
