Jeanne Lynette Ohms was born on March 31, 1923 to C. Henry and Minnie (Christensen) Ohms on the family farm seven miles east of Kirkman, Iowa. She started elementary school in Kirkman before the family moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where she attended school in Millard, finished grade school at Mason Grade School in Omaha, and graduated from Omaha Technical High School with the Class of 1940. When she was ten years old, she was baptized at the Third Presbyterian Church in Omaha.
Jeanne was employed by the Seventh Service Army Command, located in Omaha, from 1941 to 1944 at which time she enlisted in the United States Coast Guard (SPARS). She served during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Her basic training was taken at Palm Beach, Florida and she was stationed at the District Coast Guard Office in Seattle, Washington, as well as the Coast Guard Air Station at Port Angeles, Washington.
After returning from the service in 1946, she was employed at A. Hospe Company (a music company) in Omaha until January of 1949, at which time she returned to federal civil service and went to work for the Naval Reserve Officer Recording Activity located at Fort Omaha.
She also served in the United States Navy (WAVES) during the Korean Conflict in 1951 and 1952, stationed at the Naval Recruit Depot located in San Diego, California. She returned to her job at Fort Omaha after returning from the Navy and worked there until July of 1975 when the functions of the activity were moved to New Orleans, Louisiana.
Jeanne spent countless hours researching family history and created genealogy books for different branches of the family. Updates were provided every year at the family reunion. Jeanne’s many nieces and nephews have cherished memories of vacation trips with her and the times spent with her in Omaha during the summers and holidays.
Jeanne died on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 in Omaha, Nebraska, having attained the age of ninety-one years, nine months, and twenty days. She was preceded in death by her parents, C. Henry and Minnie; brothers-in-law Folmer Johnson and Quentin Bequette; and sisters-in-law Norma Jean Ohms and Delores Ohms.
She is survived by her sisters Verda Johnson of Elk Horn, Iowa and Eunice Bequette of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother Amond Ohms of Bennington, Nebraska; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
