Jeannette Jan Gettys
October 20, 1932 — August 12, 2013
Jeannette Darlene �Jan� Gettys was born on October 20, 1932 to Byron �BK� and Ruth (Jenkins) Stephens in Huron, South Dakota. She was baptized at the First Congregational Church in Huron. Jan graduated from Wall Lake High School and attended Cottey College, State Teacher�s College in Cedar Falls and Buena Vista University.
On December 26, 1957 in Wall Lake, Iowa, Jan was united in marriage to Gene Gettys and his two children: Pam and Tom. Five children were born into this union: Jill, Joe L., Jock, Tricia, and Gene, Jr. Together they raised all seven children as one loving family.
Jan was a teacher for twenty-four years and also enjoyed being a Shaklee Distributor during that time period. She enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and following her kid�s and grandkid�s activities. She also enjoyed baking and cooking, especially for others, and was a member of the PEO Chapter AP. Jan was always active and enjoyed her role as a director and coordinator of anything and everything.
Jan died on Monday, August 12, 2013 having attained the age of eighty years, nine months, and twenty-three days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers: Richard and Norton Stephens.
She is survived by her children: Pam and her husband Danny Captain of Seneca, Missouri, Tom Gettys and his wife Jackie of Dallas, Texas, Jill and her husband Tom Murtaugh of Harlan, Iowa, Joe L. Gettys and his wife Kathy of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jock Gettys and his wife Tracee of Harlan, Iowa, Tricia and her husband Merrit Blunk of Kiron, Iowa, and Gene Gettys, Jr. and his wife Angie of Harlan, Iowa; twenty-one grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; brother Kenneth Stephens and his wife Myrt of Grimes, Iowa; sister Mariam Kindred of Frisco, Texas; other family members and many friends.
Pastor Donna Ewert officiated the 1:30 PM funeral service on Friday, August 16, 2013 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, Iowa. Music was provided by Freda Boeck, Rebecca Erlmeyer, and Jade Albertsen. Serving as casket bearers were Pam Captain, Tom Gettys, Jill Murtaugh, Joe L. Gettys, Jock Gettys, Tricia Blunk, and Gene Gettys, Jr. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
