Jeannette Havick was born on December 16, 1917, in Jackson Township to George and Anna (Willesen) Sorensen.

She attended Jackson No. 9 country school, as three generations of her family, starting with her mother. She graduated with the Class of 1934 from Harlan High School. During her last two years of education, she studied teaching and taught at Jackson No. 9 for a number of years.

In 1941, Jeannette was united in marriage to Dallas Havick. Two children were born to this union: Janis and David.

They moved in 1951 to the farm built by Jeannette’s grandfather, seeing it become a Century Farm in 1983. Jeannette was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville and enjoyed working with her women’s circle. She loved to write poetry for her loved ones’ special occasions and for her own enjoyment.

Jeannette became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Home in January and it was there that she died on March 28, 2008, having attained the age of ninety years, three months, and twelve days. She was preceded in death by her parents her brother; Chris Sorensen and sister Vivian Keating.

Jeannette is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, Dallas Havick of rural Harlan; her daughter Janis and her husband Melvin Dinesen of Harlan; her son David Havick and his wife Kim of Altoona, Iowa; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her sister Arleen (Roland) Larson of Palm Beach, Florida and her sister-in-law Inez Sorensen of Harlan; other family members and many friends.

A funeral service was held on Monday, March 31, 2008, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Pastor Henry Flessner led the 11:00 AM service. Honorary casket bearers were Diane Stewart, John Havick, Kelly Doonan, Connie White, Sandy Walker, and Jeanette Clemons. Serving as casket bearers were Joel Havick, Darrel Mathiasen, Robert Heflin, Galen Johannsen, Tom Walker, and Jason Dinesen. Interment was held at the Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa.
