Jerry Lee Hansen was born on the family farm in rural Kimballton, Iowa. He was born to Bertha (Jacobsen) and Hans T. Hansen on March 7, 1940. In the one-room school of Jackson #6, Jerry received his education. He learned many life lessons by working for numerous neighboring farmers and driving truck for E.A. Greve as a young man.
On January 27, 1957, Jerry married Sherry Ann Berry which truly became the love of his life and best friend throughout their 57 years of marriage. They were blessed with six children: Deb, Betty, Cindy, Darli Jo, Jane Marie and Jim. He served as a perfect role-model for his children as he was a kind, humble, loving, hard-working and soft spoken dad. He lived his life with a strong set of values and his love of God.
Jerry had immense pride in having a clean bean field, raising and milking cows, farrowing sows, immaculate mowed lawns and his Danish heritage. Jerry had a great love of duck, geese, quail hunting, fishing in Canada and yes, even the golf games with his “somewhat competitive wife”! Jerry was forever surrounded by family and friends sharing stories, sharing laughs or enjoying a cup of coffee or Dr. Pepper with sugar cookies or Little Debbie snack cakes! He loved his dogs like they were part of the family. He also had a strong love for kids, always taking the time to listen to their stories which made him sought after when in presence of all children. In his later years as he worked at Prairie Rose Lake, he enjoyed meeting and visiting with campers.
Jerry died at his home with his dog Brandy by his side on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, attaining the age of seventy-nine years, one month and two days. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Sherry, and daughters Jane Marie and Cindy, his beloved parents, Hans T. and Bertha, and brothers, Gene, Leon, Galen and Dennis, sister-in-law, Katheryn, brother-in-law Dallas, and numerous friends.
He is survived by his children Debbie and her husband Kevin Harris of Blair, Nebraska; Betty Hansen of Des Moines, Iowa; Darli Jo and her husband Bob Vrba of Schuyler, Nebraska; Jim Hansen and his wife Angie of Harlan, Iowa; son-law Steve Cockerham of Altoona, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Cheryl Hansen of Elk Horn, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
