Jerry Ray Young Jr. was born on the Homestead Air Force Base in Homestead, FL on July 30, 1968 to Jerry Young and Kathryn Roark. Jerry passed away unexpectedly in his Harlan, IA home on May 10, 2020 at the age of 51.
Jerry grew up in Miami, FL and Camden Point, MO where he attended North Platte High School and Platte County Technical School for diesel mechanics. He moved to Merrill, IA where he met his former wife Beth Young (Boehm). They married in April of 1988 and had 4 beautiful daughters before separating 25 years later. Jerry worked for many years as a truck driver, diesel mechanic, and doing other odd jobs. In his early adult life he loved hunting wild game and training his bird dogs. He enjoyed restoring old cars, especially his 1974 Chevy Nova drag car.
After becoming disabled and no longer able to work, Jerry set off on an adventure with his white labrador Whiskey. He packed up his travel trailer and they explored different lakes and rivers in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. He often stayed in different campgrounds working as a camp host and doing light maintenance. While “down south” he spent time meeting new people, fishing, hiking, and collecting different rocks and arrowheads.
Jerry spent the last few years of his life back in Iowa. He loved spending time with his 14 grandchildren. He also worked hard to become a Mason.
