Jewell Lois Croft Payton
June 17, 1927 — July 21, 2016
Jewell Lois Croft Payton was born June 17, 1927 to Robert William and Ethel (Jeffries) Wall in Casey County, Kentucky. She attended school at Poplar Springs School, five miles from Liberty Kentucky.
Jewell was united in marriage in 1947 to George Lee Croft of Kirkman, Iowa and were married until his death in 1967. She then married Leonard Payton of Harlan, Iowa in 1969 and they remained married until his death in 2009.
She was a homemaker until 1967 when she joined Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan as a nurses aid. She then began doing babysitting from 1972 until her retirement in 1993. Jewell was a member of the Church of Christ in Harlan.
Jewell died on Thursday, July 21, 2016 while a resident at Elm Crest Retirement Community at the age of eighty-nine year, one month and four days. She was preceded in death by both her husbands; her brothers, Elmer Wall and Cleo Wall; and her sisters, Vergie Wilson, Mary Gilpin and Anna Mae Clements.
She is survived by two sons, James V. Croft of Pullman, Washington and Robert C. Croft of Omaha, Nebraska; three grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
