Joan Esther Brendle, daughter of George and Esther Rose (Sommers) Yokom, was born March 29, 1931 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was baptized and confirmed at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Council Bluffs. Joan attended Holy Family Grade School and graduated from St. Francis High School. She earned her nursing degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.
On October 11, 1952, Joan was united in marriage to Robert Dean Brendle at St. Francis Catholic Church. Three children were born to this union: George Anthony, Kathleen Joan, and Steven Robert. Joan worked at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa as a surgical nurse and became supervisor of the Surgery Department, until retiring in the 1980's.
Joan spent time crocheting and knitting, she liked staying active by golfing and bowling. She also enjoyed being outdoors, camping, fishing, gardening and canning her fresh produce. Joan loved to travel and vacation to Texas in the winter months. Most of all, Joan loved time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Joan died surrounded by her loving family at her home in Avoca, Iowa on Tuesday, August 29, 2017, attaining the age of eighty-six years, five months. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Brendle, siblings Abner Yokom, Richard Yokom, Helen "Honey" Wilson- Beavers, Paul Yokom.
She has left to cherish her memory her children George "Tony" Brendle of Avoca, Iowa; Kathleen and her husband Wesley Rasmussen of Canton, Ohio; Steven Brendle and his wife Dianna of Council Bluffs, Iowa; 5 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister Carolyn "Candy" Ludwig of Lake View, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
