With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Joan “Jo Jo” Shirley Fryar (Boerner), who peacefully left this world on December 15, 2024, after a brave battle with cancer. Born on January 3, 1958, Jo Jo lived a life defined by love, compassion, and selflessness.
On September 11, 1981, she married Brian Fryar, and together they built a family rooted in love and devotion. Jo Jo’s heart was her guiding force, and her life was a reflection of that love. From raising her own children to caring for the elderly and supporting families in need, she dedicated herself to the well-being of others.
Her career in caregiving spanned nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health care, and more. Jo Jo devoted herself to serving the elderly and vulnerable in Denison, Iowa, and its surrounding communities. She was a familiar and beloved presence in homes, care facilities, and healthcare settings. When her children were young, she ran a beloved in-home daycare where she poured her love and care into the children of her community. Her warmth, patience, and nurturing spirit left a lasting impact on everyone she encountered.
Jo Jo loved the simple joys of life. She had a special fondness for Tweety Bird, enjoyed camping, and found her greatest happiness in the company of her family — especially her children and grandchildren, who were her pride and joy. She treasured the time spent camping with loved ones, making cherished memories under the open sky. Her home was a gathering place filled with laughter, love, and the warmth of her giving heart.
She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Jeremy Dave Frank; her parents, Robert and Larrine Boerner (Schiernbeck), her brother, Robert “Bobby” Boerner; and her sister Mary Jane Boerner. While their loss weighed heavy on her heart, she carried their memories with love and strength.
Jo Jo leaves behind a family who will forever cherish her legacy: her devoted husband, Brian; her children, Keri (Jason), Amanda “Mandi” (Tim), and Matt (Melissa); her grandchildren, Sara (Aaron), Jennifer “Jenny” (Brock), Kira (Will), Chasity, and Justin; and her great-grandson, Kysen, baby Folk, Elijah, and Ella. Her sisters, Judy, Deloras, Joy, and Pat, also survive her, each carrying a piece of Jo Jo’s loving spirit in their hearts. Her impact on this world goes beyond words and will live on through the lives she touched.
Jo Jo’s light will continue to shine in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Her love was endless, her spirit unshakable, and her legacy unforgettable. Rest in peace, Jo Jo. You were, and always will be, a guiding light for your family and friends.
Family will receive friends at Joan's residence on December 27, 2024, at 5:00 PM.
