Joan Ruth Gray was born March 6, 1935, in Bode, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard and Elenora Redding Devine. Joan was baptized in the Catholic faith in St. Joseph, Iowa and later confirmed at St. Patrick’s church in Buffalo Center, Iowa. She graduated from Woden Community School and then went on to attend Mount Mercy Junior College.
On December 27, 1956 Joan was united in marriage to Donald George Gray at Sacred Heart Church in Woden, Iowa and made their first home in Kanawha, Iowa. To this union nine children were born. Joan loved being a homemaker and raising her children. She was also very active in her church.
Golfing and playing cards were favorite pastimes along with going to casinos and watching sports. She looked forward to traveling and made many trips to Arizona to winter with her children. Joan was a faithful servant of St. Rose of Lima by serving as a Eucharistic Minister for 25 years, being Secretary and Vice President of Legion of Mary and also on the Funeral Committee.
Joan passed away on July 23, 2018 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 83 years, 4 months and 17 days. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Don in 1996, infant son Joseph and brothers: Dick, Dale and Jerry Devine.
Left to cherish her memories are her children: Kathy (Craig) Brown of Chandler, Arizona, Jack (Joan) Gray of Johnston, Iowa, Mary Vaage of Chandler, Arizona, Jim (Rhonda) Gray of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, Pam (Pat) Drennen of Clinton, Iowa, Sue Gray of Des Moines, Iowa, Joe Gray of Phoenix, Arizona and Jay Gray of Lawton, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; brother and sisters: Don (Jean) Devine of Lake City, Iowa, Sister Emily Devine of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Judy Devine of Eagan, Minnesota; sister-in-law Mary Devine of Estherville, Iowa; other relatives and many friends.
