Joan M. Harm was born in Manning, Iowa, August 4, 1952, the daughter of Henry and Velma Cecilia Kenkel Frees. She was raised on the farm at Irwin until age 15 when the family moved to Denison where she graduated from high school with the class of 1970. She made her home in Denison where she and Randy were blessed with the birth of two children: Brian and Tabitha. Joan was employed at the Denison Newspapers for two years before beginning her 36 year career in 1971 at Crawford County Bank from which she retired in 2007. Following her retirement from the bank she was employed at Casey’s, Pronto, Frontier Phone Company and, until becoming ill, was the custodian at the First United Methodist Church in Denison. In her leisure time Joan enjoyed shopping trips, casino trips, playing Bonco, visiting with people and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison and the Ladies Guild where she served as a chair lady. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Frees and Velma Frees Pedersen. Those remaining to cherish her memory include two children: Brian Harm and Tabitha and husband Derek Hoyle of Denison, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Taylor, Timothy, Gracie, Kole, James, Madalyn and Samantha; two sisters: Judy and husband, Ray Pedersen of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Jodi and husband Mark Ohl of Denison, Iowa; one brother, Gene Frees of La Vista, Nebraska, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison with Father Paul Kelly as Celebrant. Others participating in the mass included Lector, Rev. Alberta Ervin; Servers: Joe Graeve and Collin Scheuring; Gift Bearers: Gene Frees, Judy Pedersen, and Jodi Ohl; and Eucharistic Ministers: Pat Breen, Dorothy Mendlik and Mary Ann Verbik. Music for the Mass included soloist, EveVonne Muff singing “Here I Am Lord”, “Amazing Grace”, “Ave Maria”, and “On Eagle’s Wings” with Judy Thams serving as accompanist. Pallbearers were Tonny Pedersen, Jessy Ohl, Quincy Ohl, Ryan Frees, Austin Frees, and Martin Zezulak. Interment was at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery, Denison, Iowa. Following the graveside rites and burial the family invited everyone to join them at the St. Rose Parish Center for fellowship and a luncheon prepared and served by St. Rose of Lima Ladies Guild. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home, www.pfannebecker.com , Denison, Iowa was in charge of arrangements where on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 a Legion of Mary Rosary was prayed at 3:30 p.m. and a visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
