Joan A. Hoemann was born in Kansas City, Missouri, September 17, 1925, the daughter of Dr. Armand and Margaret Witherow Naviaux. When she was very young the family moved to Omaha, Nebraska where she was raised and graduated from St. Mary's High School. She furthered her education at Creighton University, receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in 1947. Following college, Joan taught high school English and history for three years at Manilla High School in Manilla, Iowa. On June 1, 1950, Joan was united in marriage with George H. Hoemann at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Their union was blessed with seven children: George, John, Jim, Jeff, Peg, Pat and Jerry. They made their home in Denison, Iowa, where Joan was a fulltime wife and mother. George died March 26, 1996, and Joan continued to reside in their home in Denison. In her spare time she loved to read mysteries novels, crochet, play dominoes, email and play card games on the computer and watch old movies. Joan also enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren playing games such as Chinese checkers. She will be remembered by her family as a loving mother and grandmother, whose children still recall the aroma of fresh baked bread as they ran up the driveway to the house as they got off the school bus. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison and their Ladies Guild, A.A.U.W. and the neighborhood Chatter Club. Joan died early Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 86 years, 5 months and 21 days. Including her parents and her husband, Joan was also preceded in death by her brother, John Naviaux. Those remaining to cherish her memory include seven children: George Hoemann and partner Roger Weaver of Quincy, Illinois, John Hoemann of Denison, Iowa, Jim Hoemann and wife, Dian of Denver, Colorado, Jeff Hoemann and wife, Ann of Clive, Iowa, Peg Hoemann of Ankeny, Iowa, Pat Hoemann and husband, Mike Fink of Deloit, Iowa, and Jerry Hoemann of Fort Collins, Colorado; 9 grandchildren: James, Patrick, David and Andrew Crawford, Jessica Graeve, Andee Belknap and Kathryn, Carolyn and George Hoemann; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Mary Naviaux of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Don and Fola Hoemann; and Bonnie and Harold Segebart of Denison, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 10, 2012, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Denison, Iowa, with Father Paul Kelly as Celebrant. Others participating in the Mass included Servers: Austin Freese and Carla Rodriguez; Lector: Judy Brodersen; Gift Bearers: Kathryn and Carolyn Hoemann; and Eucharistic Ministers: Nora Millea, Dorothy Leinen and Andrea Hansen. Those providing music for the Mass included soloist Susan King singing “Ave Maria” and St. Rose of Lima Adult Choir singing “Amazing Grace”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Old Rugged Cross” with Jean Cornelius serving as accompanist. Pallbearers were Joan’s nine grandchildren: James, Patrick, David and Andrew Crawford, Jessica Graeve, Andee Belknap, and Kathryn, Carolyn and George Hoemann. Interment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Denison, Iowa. Following the interment all were invited to the Parish Center for fellowship and a meal prepared by Hy-Vee and St. Rose of Lima Ladies Guild. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home,
