Joan “Jo” Maxine Miller
Joan “Jo” Maxine Miller was the third of three triplets born on June 25, 1931 in Pottawattamie County to Roy B. and Alma Rose (Jensen) Kirkpatrick. She was baptized at the Presbyterian Church in Avoca, Iowa and was a member of the United Church of Christ in Avoca, Iowa.
Jo went to grade school at the France School House outside of Shelby, Iowa. The triplets were very close throughout their lives. In school they were given colored bracelets to tell them apart. Jo’s bracelet was her favorite color - red. Jo graduated with the Shelby High School Class of 1950. She had six brothers and sisters: Eloise, Calvin, Irene, Jane, Jeanette and Dale.
Jo married Fred “Fritz” Miller on May 26, 1950 in Denison, Iowa. They had one son - Fred. All three triplets married men with a last name beginning in M, and all the men had May birthdays!
She was a farm wife for many years, worked at the Sale Barn, Red’s Café, and she helped run and was the co-owner of “Miller Time” in Walnut, Iowa. Over the last several years we have seen her behind the counter at the Avoca Super Foods Grocery Store Deli. She canned all her life, sewed beautiful quilts, one is being auctioned at the United Church of Avoca right now. She was well known throughout the community and she touched many lives. Her mischievous smile will be missed by all.
Jo died at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa on Wednesday November 11, 2015. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of sixty three years “Fritz”, brothers Dale and Calvin, and sisters Irene and Jane.
She is survived by her son Fred Miller (Marlene Maassen) of Avoca, Iowa, granddaughter Kellie Maassen and her two children Daulton and Emma of Avoca, Iowa; sisters - Eloise Haight of Minden, Iowa and Jeanette “Nettie” Michaelsen of Walnut, Iowa; many nephews, nieces and friends.
