She was raised in Vail where she graduated from high school with the class of 1948.On July 18, 1948, Joan was united in marriage with Gerald “Jerry” Osterlund at her parents’ home which was beautifully decorated with flowers from their garden. Joan’s maid of honor was Gloria Ewoldt and Jerry’s best man was Kenneth Buck. Their union was blessed with two children, Roy and Beverly. They made their home in California and New Mexico before returning to Denison in 1957 where they raised their family. After her children were mostly grown Joan became a cook for the Denison Community Schools, a position she held for thirty one years, retiring at age 71.Jerry died June 15, 1991, and Joan continued to live and work in Denison.Jerry and Joan loved camping and were volunteers at Cutty’s in Okoboji for many years. In her leisure time Joan enjoyed volunteering reading to those learning English in the elementary grades and most of all cherished times spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.Joan was a long time active member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison where she taught Sunday school for 31 years and was a member of the United Presbyterian Women Circles. Other memberships she enjoyed include the American Legion Auxiliary and the Retired School Personnel having served as president of both organizations.In October of 2013, Joan entered the Denison Care Center, Denison, Iowa, and it was there her death occurred Friday afternoon, July 31, 2015. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 84 years, 10 months and 19 days.Joan was preceded in death by her father Raymond Buck, mother Hertha Riddle, stepfather Ralph Riddle, brother Kenneth Buck and brother-in-law Rovanis Preul.Those remaining to cherish her memory include one son Roy Osterlund and wife Donna of Templeton, Iowa, one daughter Beverly and husband Ray Bjork of Ocheyedan, Iowa; six grandchildren: Christopher (Diane) Winey of Carroll, Iowa, Travis (Kerri) Osterlund of Carroll, Iowa, Skip (Tiffany) Winey of Perry, Iowa, Seth (Renie) Osterlund of Carroll, Iowa, Tiffany (Andy) Mulligan of Defiance, Iowa, and Kelsie Venteicher of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 14 great grandchildren; one brother: Arlo Buck and wife Lois of Carroll, Iowa; one sister: Berneil Preul of Denison, Iowa; sister-in-law: Lois Buck of Denison, Iowa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 4, 2015, at the United Presbyterian Church, Denison, Iowa, with Pastor Lue Baker officiating. Music for the service included a recorded procession selection of Alabama’s “Angels Among Us” and recorded recessional selection of Loretta Lynn’s “There Will Be Peace In the Valley”. Other musical selections for the service included Soloist Sue Rosener singing “In the Garden” and “Old Rugged Cross” and the congregation singing “This Is My Father’s World” with Ann Voggesser as accompanist. Pallbearers were Joan’s grandchildren: Christopher Winey, Travis Osterlund, Skip Winey, Seth Osterlund, Tiffany Mulligan and Kelsie Venteicher. Interment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens, Denison, Iowa. Following the interment the family invited everyone to return to the church for fellowship, and, as requested by Joan, a taco luncheon provided by the United Presbyterian Women.
