Joan Freda Reineke was born on April 3, 1933 in Omaha, Nebraska to John and Freda (Soll) Emken. Joan was one of five children in the family. She attended school in Aurora, Nebraska and played basketball in high school before graduating from Hancock High School in Hancock, Iowa. She was named Miss Hancock and won a free airplane ride from Corley airport.
She was united in marriage to Roger D. Reineke on December 2, 1950 at Silver Creek Methodist Church in rural Hancock, Iowa. Two children were born to this union Robert and Kathy.
Joan worked at Oakland Manor and at the Oakland Country Club but mostly helped her husband farm. She enjoyed gardening and raising chickens and had a very large collection of chicken items. She enjoyed visiting with people and took care of many older people. She liked to sew and was a great seamstress. She also enjoyed playing the organ for her own pleasure.
Joan died at home on Thursday, May 16, 2013 having attained the age of eighty years, one month, and thirteen days. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Roger, daughter Kathy Benson, and brother Robert Emken.
She is survived by her son Robert Reineke and his wife Donna of Treynor, Iowa; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; sister Wilma Lund of Rancho Palos Verdes, Californa; brothers Roger Emken and his wife Ethyl of Lapotte, Colorado and Harold Emken and his wife Jackie of Bellevue, Nebraska; son-in-law Bob Benson of Greeley, Colorado; sister-in-law Mary Lou Emken of Avoca, Iowa; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Roger Emken officiated the 10:30 am funeral service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa on Saturday, May 25, 2013. Honorary pallbearers were David Dixon, Brian Reineke, Jeff Reineke and Teresa Djilali. Inurnment was held in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Hancock, Iowa.
