JoAnn Mary (Ingwersen) Finerty, daughter of Elmer and Lillian Ingwersen, was born on July 6, 1932, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Persia, Iowa. JoAnn graduated valedictorian from Persia High School class of 1950 and pursued further education at Van Sant School of Business in Omaha, Nebraska.
On April 16, 1955, JoAnn married John Daniel Finerty at the Base Chapel, Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. Their union was blessed with four daughters: Patricia, Kathleen, Karen, and Connie. JoAnn and John made their home on a farm outside of Persia, where they dedicated their lives to farming and raising their family.
JoAnn was a loving mother who took great joy in raising their daughters on the farm. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, playing the piano, and attending their girls music and sporting events. Through the years she loved attending grandchildren games and activities. She cherished her time with friends at the Ringside Card Club, Persia bowling team and her coffee groups. John and JoAnn enjoyed travel and were avid Saint Louis Cardinal and Nebraska Cornhusker fans.
She was a devoted member of the Catholic Daughters of America, JoAnn was honored as Woman of the Year by the state regent in 2009. Her faith was central to her life, and she was an active member of St. Mary's Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. In 2017, JoAnn moved to Elm Crest Senior Living Community in Harlan,Iowa.
She passed away on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at CHI Health Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 91 years, 10 months, and 12 days. JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Lillian Ingwersen; her husband, John; her daughters, Patricia and Connie; her brother, Darold; and sister-in-law, Leah Ingwersen.
JoAnn is survived by her daughters, Kathy (Ron) Gau of Persia, Iowa, and Karen (Paul) Waltz of Clive, Iowa; her son-in-law, George (Mary) Harman of Lincoln, Nebraska; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild on the way.
