JoAnn Hilda Weihs, daughter of Tom and Lena (Leinen) Schumacher, was born February 11, 1931 in Defiance, Iowa. She attended school at St. Peter's in Defiance. After high school, JoAnn attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught in country school until she got married.
On February 11, 1952, JoAnn married Wilfred C. Weihs, Harlan, Iowa. They farmed east of Harlan where they raised seven children: Karen, Connie, Gary, Linda, Mary, John and Toni. In 2015 she became a resident of the Avoca Care Center.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. JoAnn enjoyed gardening, playing cards, supporting her children's activities, and baking; especially known for her from-scratch angel food cakes. She was involved with music in the church and gave piano lessons to her children and numerous other students. JoAnn was also a 4-H leader, substitute teacher, founding member of the Goldenaires musical group, and a longtime member of St. Michael's church.
JoAnn was 85 when she passed away on November 21, 2016 at Myrtue Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Hilda Kimmen, Mildred Hoffmann, Florence Schumacher, Viola Hoffmann, Vernon Schumacher, Dorothy Hoffmann, Melvin Schumacher, Charles Schumacher, and Marge Greer.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Wilfred Weihs of Harlan, Iowa; children Dr. Karen Weihs (Dr. Richard Lane) of Tuscon, AZ; Connie (Sandy) Booth of Boone, IA; Gary (Diane) Weihs of Harlan, IA; Linda (Brent Hansen) of Avoca, IA, Mary (Scott) Buchanan of San Anselmo, CA, John Weihs of Hudson, IA; Toni (Steve) Nichols of Elkhorn, NE; 12 grandchildren: Nate (Anne) Booth, John (Shelly) Booth, Lauren Booth; Michael Weihs, David (Fabiola) Weihs, Jenny (Ross) Holsing, Ashley (Marc) Villaverde, Adam (Jenny) Hansen, Nikki (Marcus) Nagl, Patrick Carabell, Josie Nichols, and Caroline Nichols; and six great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
