Joanne Elizabeth Andersen was born on May 24, 1934 to Malvern and Arlene (Malick) Rasmussen in Harlan, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan. As young girls, both Joanne and her sister Jean spent time at the Harlan Roller Mill which was owned and operated by their grandfather, L. H. Rasmussen. The two girls worked in the swimming pool concession stand with their parents in Harlan. She attended Harlan High School and graduated with the Class of 1953. After high school, Joanne went to work at Mutual of Omaha.
On August 4, 1956, she was united in marriage to Dewey J. Andersen. Dewey and Joanne had met at the Harlan skating rink. It took Dewey only five days to ask Joanne to marry him. It took Joanne a little longer to accept.
After Dewey was transferred to Indianapolis with his job, she was able to continue working for Mutual of Omaha. Then the couple moved to Chicago and became parents to D. Jay and Stacy Jo. Joanne was able to stay home and raise her children. The family settled in Hinsdale, Illinois, a smaller community outside of Chicago. When the children were older, she went back to work, and took a job at Johnson Controls. After Johnson Controls moved the corporate office, Joanne took a job with Pampered Chef and worked in that corporate office until she retired in 2003.
Joanne was a big fan of both the Chicago Bulls basketball team and the Chicago Cubs baseball team. The family attended many games over the years.
After Dewey’s death in 1994, Joanne moved to Downers Grove, Illinois, where she remained until her death on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the age of eighty years, ten months, and eighteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
She is survived by her son D. Jay Andersen of Downers Grove, Illinois; daughter Stacy Jo and her husband Jerald Hanselman of Lombard, Illinois; sister Jean Findlay of Woodbine, Iowa; sisters-in-law Patricia Morgan of Ottumwa, Iowa and Mary Lu Woodford of Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri; other family members and friends.
