John “Jack” Patrick Clarey was born in Denison, Iowa, January 15, 1934, the son of Thomas and Frieda Cassebarth Clarey. He was raised in Denison where he graduated from high school. From August of 1956 until his honorable discharge in August of 1958 Jack served his country in the United States Army. Upon his discharge he returned to Denison, Iowa, where he spent his entire career working as a draftsman and surveyor for the Crawford County Engineer’s Office. Jack was passionate about bicycling, participating in Ragbrai, The Senior Games and other local races.Jack passed away in Frisco, Texas, November 1, 2016, (All Saints Day). At the time of his death he had been blessed with 82 years, 9 months and 16 days.Including his parents, Thomas and Frieda Clarey, Jack was also preceded in death by his sister Patricia Murtaugh.Those remaining to cherish his memory include his brother: Joseph “Mick” Clarey and his wife Pat of Denison, Iowa; three children: Patrick Clarey of Denison, Iowa, Christin (Gregg) Gagnon of Little Elm, Texas and their two children, Ella and Micah, and Shawn Clarey of Carroll, Iowa; his former wife, Judith Clarey of Carroll, Iowa, other relatives and friends.A memorial mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 10, 2016, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Denison, Iowa, with Father Paul Kelly as Celebrant. Others participating in the mass included Servers: Diego Arambula and John Graeve; Lector: Judy Brodersen; Gift Bearers: Ella and Micah Gagnon; and Eucharistic Ministers: Shary Livingston, Ione Hinners and Dorothy Leinen. Music for the mass was provided by St. Rose of Lima Adult Choir singing “Here I Am Lord”, “Be Not Afraid”, “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman” and “On Eagle’s Wings” with Jean Cornelius serving as accompanist. Military Honors were provided by the America Legion Post 8, Denison, Iowa, with Father Paul Kelly playing “Taps”. Inurnment was at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery, Denison, Iowa. Following the inurnment the family invited everyone to the Parish Center for a time of fellowship and a luncheon provided by St. Rose of Lima Ladies Guild. A visitation was held on Thursday, November 10, 2016, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison from 9:30 a.m. until service time. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home,
