John Warren Hillwick
April 27, 1945 — December 2, 2023
John Warren Hillwick was born on April 27, 1945 to Mary Alice Hillwick in St. Charles, Illinois. As a child, John was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Chicago, Illinois. When John was 18 years old, he enlisted in the Marine Corps.
After completing two tours in Vietnam, John came home and was reunited with Sara Lynch. Throughout the time John was in Vietnam, him and Sara wrote letters back and forth to one another, which led to them falling in love. They were united in marriage on February 24, 1968 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. To this union, four sons were born: Andrew, Matthew, Jacob, and Joshua.
John loved spending time with his family. Over their 55+ years together, John and Sara spent many days traveling and camping together. John was a proud grandpa of 11 and great grandpa of 6. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up and supporting them in each activity they participated in.
John passed away peacefully at his home in Harlan, Iowa on Saturday, December 2, 2023 attaining the age of 78 years, 7 months and 5 days. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Alice Williams.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Hillwick of Harlan, IA; children: Andrew Hillwick of Blair, NE; Matthew (Stephanie) Hillwick of Billings, MO; Jacob Hillwick of Omaha, NE; Joshua (Kathy) Hillwick of Westphalia, IA; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Kathy (Jick) Jimerson of AL; many other relatives and friends.
