John Maassen
March 9, 1926 — October 27, 2008
John Oliver Maassen, the son of Julieus and Sena Andersen Maassen, was born on March 9, 1926 in Avoca, Iowa. He attended the local country school and graduated from Avoca High School in 1943. He then went to work for his brother, Walter, on a farm near Marne, Iowa. In 1950, he began to farm on his own and in 1951 he started a partnership with his brother, Curtis.
John was united in marriage to Maxine Watkins on January 30, 1954 in Avoca. They were the parents of four sons: Dale, Paul, Gary and Alan. In 1968 the family moved to the Maassen family farm south of Avoca. In 1981, John and Maxine retired from farming and moved to their home in Avoca on Frost Avenue. John always enjoyed driving the farm truck, either hauling grain or livestock.
John and Maxine enjoyed golfing and playing cards with their friends. They also enjoyed spending many winters in Texas and Arizona. He was a member of the United Church of Avoca.
John died on Monday, October 27, 2008 at the Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska having attained the age of eighty-two years, seven months and eighteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Maxine; his brothers and sisters: Orpha Stamp, Howard, Gerald, Walter, Ralph, Dale and Curtis.
Survivors include his sons: Dale and his wife Angie of Hancock, Iowa; Paul and his wife Sharon of Omaha, Nebraska; Gary and his wife Cathy of Chicago, Illinois and Alan and his wife Kimarie of Avoca, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; one great grandson; brothers and sisters: Willis Maassen and his wife Betty and Francis Maassen, all of Avoca; Joan Andersen of Atlantic, Iowa; sisters-in-law: Betty Maassen and Jeannette Maassen, both of Walnut, Iowa; many nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the United Church of Avoca with Nancy Ross-Hullinger as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were John�s grandchildren: Carl Maassen, Kristen Maassen, Cory Maassen, Kale Maassen, Angie Frink, Erin Maassen, Joey Maassen, Emily Maassen, Matt Maassen, Eric Maassen and David Maassen. Interment was held at the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa.
