Jon Weston Rasmussen
June 7, 1945 — November 9, 2016
Jon Weston Rasmussen, son of Marvin and Iva Mae (Cox) Rasmussen, was born in Harlan, Iowa on June 7, 1945. Jon grew up on the family farm outside of Kirkman, Iowa where he attended grade school. He then attended the newly formed Irwin-Kirkman School where he graduated with the class of 1963. After high school, Jon started working at the Gearhart Lumber Company out of Harlan while still helping his father on the family farm.
On July 17, 1965, Jon was united in marriage to Judy Smith at the Harlan Methodist Church. Two children were born to this union: Kim and Jason. After their marriage, Jon and Judy rented the Patterson home up the road from the Rasmussen family farm. Later on they purchased a modular home to be moved onto the Rasmussen family farm and along with his father, Marvin, and his brother, Mike formed MJM Farms, Inc. In 1966, Jon joined the United States Army Reserves where he served his country until his honorable discharge on January 31, 1972.
Jon drove school bus for Irwin-Kirkman schools for nearly 9 years. He enjoyed working as a Park Manager at the Elk Horn Recreational Area Park prior to his retirement. Whenever help was needed at his church at Kirkman he would be there. He was a lifelong member at the Kirkman United Methodist Church.
Times Jon enjoyed the most were camping and fishing with his family at Storm Lake and Littlefield, and taking vacations. He also very much enjoyed visiting friends and playing cards. In Jon’s alone time you could find him watching NASCAR, Monday Night Football or the Big Bang Theory on TV. Jon enjoyed farming and passed that love down to his children and grandchildren. Taking his grandkids to the zoo or just picking apples from the apple trees on the farm, Jon loved being a grandpa. He loved giving rides on the tractors. Anytime spent with them he considered precious time. Jon and Judy celebrated 50 years of marriage with a trip to Hawaii prior to his illness.
Jon died on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 surrounded by family at the Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa attaining the age of seventy-one years, five months and two days. In addition to his parents, Jon was preceded in death by his grandson Matthew Williams.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years Judy Rasmussen of Kirkman, Iowa; children: Jason Rasmussen and his wife Emmalie of Manilla, Iowa and Kim Williams of Harlan, Iowa; grandchildren: Andrea and Zack Williams; Caylie, Macy and Jonathan Rasmussen; brother Mike Rasmussen and his wife Suzanne of Kirkman; half-sister Elsa and her husband Walter Richardson of Hewitt, Texas; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
