Joseph Englebert Flies, son of John and Frances (Berger) Flies, was born on January 7, 1922 in Dedham, Iowa. He was baptized at St. Joseph�s Catholic Church in Dedham, Iowa and later received his first communion at St. Patrick�s Church in Audubon, Iowa. Joseph attended country school in rural Audubon county.
After his schooling, Joseph worked with his father and brothers on the family farm. On November 9, 1942, Joe was inducted into the United States Army at Camp Dodge in Iowa. He was honorably discharged on February 13, 1943 from Camp Roberts in California. After his discharge, Joe returned to Iowa and farmed near Audubon and Fiscus.
Joe met the love of his life, Theda Rosman, at a dance in Defiance, Iowa and on January 8, 1952, they were united in marriage at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. After their marriage, Joe and Theda lived at various farms in the Defiance and Harlan areas until 1989 when they retired and made their home in Harlan. Even after his retirement, Joe continued to stay busy helping family, friends and neighbors; whether it be hauling corn, mowing yards, raking leaves or helping out at the church. He also loved spending time with his family and playing cards with his family and friends.
Joseph died on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan, Iowa having attained the age of eighty-eight years, six months and thirteen days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Peter who died in infancy, John, Peter, Matt, George, Frances, Michael and Theresa.
He is survived by his wife, Theda of Harlan; his children: Raymund and his wife Ellen of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mary Jo and her husband David Law of Lawton, Iowa, Mike and his wife Cathy of Defiance, Iowa and John and his wife Denise of Blair, Nebraska; thirteen grandchildren, four great- granddaughters, his sister Marie Brannan of Audubon, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at St Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa with Father Chris Fontanini officiating. Interment was at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa with Alan Flies, Nick Flies, Paul Flies, Greg Flies, Jeff Flies, Zach Flies and Jeremy Flies serving as casket bearers.
