Joseph Schomer, son of Jacob and Mary (Petsche) Schomer, was born on February 6, 1916 outside of Westphalia, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa and graduated from St. Boniface Catholic School.
On June 22, 1943, Joe was united in marriage to Bernice Buman at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Six children were born to this union: Joe, Jr.; Mary; Rose Anne; Patricia; Kathleen; and Stephan. Joe and Bernice lived in Harlan for a while before moving to a small farm east of Tennant. Joe started doing plumbing and electrical work as well as farming. Although he enjoyed his work very much, he enjoyed the people around the Harlan area even more. He also loved music and photography.
Joe and Bernice moved to Harlan in the spring of 1998. After Bernice�s death on February 7, 2007, Joe moved to Elm Crest Retirement Center in Harlan. Joe was a longtime member of St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan.
Joe died on Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan having attained the age of ninety-two years, one month, and three days. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Bernice; and his son-in-law Bob Kohorst.
He is survived by his children: Joe Schomer, Jr. of Daytona Beach, Florida; Mary and her husband Myron Goodman of Salisbury, North Carolina; Rose and her husband Kenneth Nielsen of LaCanada, California; Pat and her husband Mike Laas of Bettendorf, Iowa; Kathleen Kohorst of Harlan, Iowa; and Stephen Schomer and his wife Tammy of Iowa City, Iowa; nineteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters: Loretta Wilson and Leona Kaufman, both of Westphalia; nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.
Father Bob Hoefler celebrated the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan. Casket bearers were Robert Anastasi, John Buman, Edwin Buman, Leonard Kaufman, Kelly Laas, Molly Laas, Kent Morgan, and Robert Wilson. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa.
