Joseph Carl Springman
August 5, 1937 — August 28, 2018
Joseph Carl Springman, son of Nicholas and Anna (Kloewer) Springman, was born August 5, 1937 in Portsmouth, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Portsmouth, where he remained a life time member. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School, graduating with the class of 1956.
On March 19, 1960, Joe was inducted into the United States Army, until he was transferred on September 18, 1960 to the United States Army Reserve. He served his country honorably until December 31, 1965.
On September 10, 1966, Joe was united in marriage to Arlene Buresh at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Ramona, Johnny, Jimmy, and Sarah.
Joe began farming after high school and continued to actively farm until 1994. He also proudly took care of St. Mary's Parish from 1988 until his death. He took great pride in keeping the grounds well maintained and the hall and church in great order. Joe loved spending time with his family. He especially found joy in giving his grandkids and great grandkids rides on the 4-Wheeler around the farm. He loved to talk about the crops and livestock over a nice cup of coffee. Joe's beard and bib overalls were known all around and he was always ready with a handshake and a smile.
Joe died surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, attaining the age of eighty-one years and twenty-three days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Mary Ann Blum.
He has left to cherish his memory, his wife of 51 years Arlene Springman of Portsmouth, Iowa; children Ramona Springman of Kimballton, Iowa; Johnny Springman and his wife Susan of Portsmouth; Jimmy Springman and his wife Shari of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Sarah and her husband Bryan Buckholdt of Underwood, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; siblings Frances and her husband Ray Anastasi of Harlan, Iowa; Helen Miller of Harlan; Theresa Blum of Harlan; Nick Springman of Portsmouth; Donald Springman of Harlan; nieces and nephews, other family members and many friends.
