Joseph Martin Zaccone was born on July 14, 1969, to Martin Charles Zaccone and Mary Jane Jacobsen Zaccone in Harlan, IA, ten minutes after his twin brother Thomas Martin Zaccone. Thus began the adventures of the Zaccone Twins! They attended St. Michael's for grade school. In middle school, Joe played the trombone in the marching and jazz bands. Joe was a member of the National Honor Society, the state football teams, and qualified for state golf his Senior year. He graduated in the top 10% with the Harlan Community High School class of 1987.
Joe, along with Tom, attended Creighton University, where they continued their golf careers. They joined the Sigma Nu Fraternity, where they made many lifelong friends. Joe graduated from Creighton in 1991, with a Bachelor of Science in Business and Finance.
After graduating Creighton, while looking for a full-time job, Joe washed dishes at the world famous Gorat's steak house in Omaha. He started his work career in 1992, at InvaCare, selling durable medical equipment covering the states of Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota for five years. In 1997, Joe opened his own Edward Jones office in Fort Dodge, IA. Joe returned to Harlan in 1999, to work with Tony Hough at Midstates Investment Center, with a plan of having Tom joining them the following year. In 2010, Joe and Tony opened Hough and Zaccone Investment Management where he worked until his passing. He dedicated his career to helping clients, working hard to gain and maintain trust with their investment needs.
Joe had a zest for life! He hunted and fished. He went skydiving. He taught himself to play the piano and amused himself and others trying to the play the harmonica. He loved to travel, taking golf trips with his buddies, cruises with friends, or going to watch Jerry fly! He frequently drove to Omaha to support his beloved Creighton Bluejays! But for Joe, his favorite pastime was golf. You regularly saw him on the course, many times in friendly (?) competition with brothers Tom and Mark, and anyone else who was around. Most importantly, Joe loved and supported all things Harlan! He most likely was the first to greet you when you moved to town. As a lifelong Booster Club member, you could see him and Tom running the chains at Friday night football games, working the clock at wrestling meets, or working the finish lines at both track and cross country meets. In addition, he was a TeamMates mentor to middle and high school students, chairperson for RAGBRAI committees, served on the board at the Harlan Golf and Country Club, and most recently a member of the Dream Playground fundraising committee. He was frequently first in line to buy raffle tickets or baked goods at parish picnics or any fundraisers in the county. In 2006, he and Tom were awarded Citizens of the Year by the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce.
Joe was committed to his faith and serving others. His generosity was exhibited daily through his sharing of his time, talents and treasure. He was a dedicated parishioner at St. Michaels, serving on the parish and finance councils, as well as managing the endowment fund investment. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, frying fish on Fridays during Lent and selling Monday Night Football raffle books where he gave himself the title of 'The Commish' and became famous for his signature sign off, "Keep the Faith."
Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Jane Zaccone, and nephew Paul Zaccone. He is survived by his father Martin Zaccone, siblings: Kerry Moore (Kevin), Michele Johnson (Scott), Nancy Crimmins (Mark), Paula LeMense (Joel), Mark Zaccone (Kim), and twin brother, Tom Zaccone, thirteen nieces and nephews, fifteen great nieces and nephews.
Above all, Joe loved God, his family, and his community. He truly lived the Jesuit principles of living, being and doing for others. And by his side always…Tom.
