Julia S. (Judy) Knott was born November 20, 1924 to John and Mary B. (Keane) Arkfeld on a farm west of Panama, IA. She was baptized, confirmed and graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Panama with the class of 1942.
She attended the College of Mount Saint Scholastica at Atchison, KS and the University of Nebraska in Omaha, NE. She graduated as a registered nurse from Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, IA in 1947.
She worked at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver, CO; Bisgard Hospital in Harlan, IA and was one of the first employees at Myrtue Hospital in Harlan when it opened in 1954. In November 2004, Judy celebrated 50 years of employment at Myrtue Hospital.
Judy was united in marriage to Floyd Knott on August 24, 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama,
IA. They were the proud parents of Paul, Ann and Robert.
Over the years, Judy was involved in a multitude of clubs and organizations. She was a devote Catholic and attended St. Michaels Catholic Church as a parishioner and a member of their Guild. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court-St. Katherine #266 of Earling, IA for over 70 years. She actively participated in Mercy Hospital Alumnae, Iowa Rural Letter Carriers, Myrtue Hospital and Legion Auxiliaries and Omaha and Harlan Quilt Guilds. She was a talented quilter, completing many quilts that became gifts for family and friends. Her favorite quilt won top awards in a quilt show.
Judy enjoyed travel which included visiting all 50 states in the US, trips to England, Ireland and many of the countries in Europe. She also loved to visit her children and grandchildren, attending as many birthdays, concerts, sporting events, recitals and weddings as possible.
Judy died on March 20, 2024 at the age of 99 years and four months. She is preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; parents, brothers Thomas, Henry (Irene), Francis, twin brother Jack (Virg); sisters Madeline and Anne Louise; close friends Charles and Esther Gearhart and Floyd Feser. She is survived by her children Paul (Andrea) Knott (Colorado Springs, CO) and their children Sean Knott and Paulette Knott; Ann (Edmund Greene) Knott Craighead (Wilkesboro, NC) and her daughters Jessica (Andrew) Stone and Jennifer (Frank) Farrington; Robert (Jayne) Knott (Bettendorf, IA) and their children Alison (James) Brennan, Madeline (Andrew Alward) Knott, Jillian (Vlad Petrov) Knott, and Hogan Knott; and great-grandchildren Delaney, Cash and Ruby. Special thanks to close family members and friends who visited and brought joy to Judy over the past few years.
