Karen was born on June 14, 1958 in Omaha, Nebraska to Lloyd and Lois (Mudra) Erwin. She was one of six children in the family. She attended school at Tri-Center in Neola, Iowa. In her youth, she enjoyed driving down Broadway in Council Bluffs with her friends and yelling at the boys. She liked to drive her dad�s blue truck and enjoyed supporting her brother at the Stock Car races by cheering loudly.
Karen worked as a Nurses Aid at Colonial Manor in Avoca, Iowa, she managed the Costal Gas Station in Harlan, worked as a bartender at various local bars and also managed a Subway in Council Bluffs.
She was married to Robert Rice and two children were born to this union, Monica and Heather. Karen married Clyde Roberts and one child was born to this union, Crystal. Karen loved spending time with her children, especially taking them to the pool.
She enjoyed fishing, tattoos, motorcycles, road trips, camping, crafts, cats and music. In recent years, she enjoyed playing Bingo and became the activities coordinator at the Regal Towers in Council Bluffs where she lived. She loved having her grandchildren stay the night with her and taking them to Bayliss Park to play in the fountain.
Karen died on July 6, 2012 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa having attained the age of fifty-four years and twenty-two days. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Shane Erwin.
She is survived by her special friend, Larry Rasmussen of Council Bluffs, Iowa; three daughters: Monica Rice of Council Bluffs, Heather and her husband Herman Lewis of Morse Bluff, Nebraska and Crystal Dawn Roberts of Council Bluffs, Iowa; seven grandchildren: Brianna Pogge, Shianne Pogge, Trevor Pogge, Tyler Rice, Brooklyn Lewis, Chelsy Roberts, Jay Jay Ness, Jr.; three great-grandchildren; her sisters: Cathy and her husband Ron Lau of Ida Grove, Iowa, Debbie and her husband Butch Hastie of Avoca, Iowa and Susan and her husband Leonard Tiffey of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two brothers Terry Erwin, Sr. and Deb Cain of Honey Creek, Iowa and Chad Erwin and his wife Angel of Glenwood, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Pastor Norm Jelken officiated the 11:00 am funeral service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa on Monday, July 9, 2012. Honorary casket bearers were: Chad Erwin, Terry Erwin, Sr. and Shane Erwin. Burial was held in the Minden Cemetery with Ron Lau, Butch Hastie, Joel Pogge, Herman Lewis, Jason Hastie, Marcus Erwin, Terry Erwin, Jr., and Nick Snethan serving as casket bearers.
