Karen Louise Owens, daughter of Virgil Milton and Etta Irene (Haferbier) Hulsebus was born on March 26th, 1941 in Harlan, Iowa, where she began her education at North Park School. In 1954, Karen's family moved to Tennant, Iowa, where she completed school, graduating from Tennant High School. After graduation, she worked in Harlan and a short time later married Richard Schiernbeck, Sr. of Denison, Iowa. They made their home in Cozad, Nebraska, before Karen returned to Harlan to raise her two children, Michelle and Rick.

After a brief marriage to Dusty Lee Owens, Karen remained in Harlan where she worked a variety of jobs over several years before moving to Neola, Iowa, and began work at Burns Brothers Truck Stop. Karen later moved to Council Bluffs to be closer to family, and worked at Thumb's Restaurant until her retirement in 1997.

She lived with her daughter Michelle and son-in-law Terry Cooper in Council Bluffs before moving to Regal Towers, where she resided for many years following. After leaving her residence there, she lived with her son Rick for a brief time in Bellevue, Nebraska, before moving to The Rose Assisted Living Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This was her home until she became a resident of Risen Son Christian Village in March of 2013. She passed on January 2nd, 2014, having attained the age of seventy-two years, nine months and seven days.

In addition to her parents, Karen is preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Hulsebus. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Terry Cooper and their children; her son, Richard Schiernbeck; brothers: Ronald Hulsebus and wife Dianne, of Ellston, Iowa, and Dean Hulsebus and wife Barb of Des Moines, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

Pastor Dwight Oswald officiated the 1:00 PM funeral service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa, on Monday, January 6, 2014. Inurnment will be held at the Harlan Cemetery at a later date.
