Karl James Krapfl was born March 17, 1924 the son of Otto and Regina Prier Krapfl. He passed away January 8, 2014 at his home; surrounded by family in Denison, Iowa at the age of 89. Karl was born in Dyersville, Iowa where he was baptized and confirmed at the Basilica Saint Francis Xavier, also in Dyersville, Iowa. Karl received his education in rural schools near his home. After finishing his education Karl farmed with his father on the family farm at Dyersville and later at Epworth, Iowa. On February 8, 1949, Karl was united in marriage to Alice Oertell at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dubuque, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with six children: Ronald, Deborah, Julie, Lynn, Larry and Kathy. Karl farmed many years in the Greeley, Iowa area. After retiring from farming, Karl worked as a district and regional sales manager for Crows, Pfister Hybrid and Midwest Seed. He established his own seed distribution business and retired from the agricultural sales field in 2011, at the age of 87. On his personal side, Karl loved to work with agriculture. He was diligent and particular in keeping his 40 acre backyard of rolling hills and oak trees immaculate. His love of land was cherished by his family as a piece of paradise. Karl enjoyed being with people, willing to lend a helping hand to others and genuine in his acts of kindness. He lived his life as quoted in the "Living Life". Karl enjoyed playing cards; teaching his grandchildren how to play Euchre, Hearts, and Solitaire. He enjoyed traveling with his family and was deeply moved and humbled to participate in mass at the Vatican with Pope John Paul. Karl was a very quiet yet holy man; believing in Our Lord Jesus Christ and serving his family as an honor to God. Karl was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison and the Knights of Columbus. Those left to cherish his memory includes his wife of 64 years, Alice Krapfl of Denison, Iowa, six children: Ronald Krapfl of Battle Creek, Iowa, Deborah Robinson of Converse, Texas, Julie and husband Nile Funk of Nashua. Iowa, Lynn and husband, Bruce Blunk of Vail, Iowa, Larry Krapfl, and wife Tracie of Charter Oak, Iowa and Kathy and husband Ross Thul of Denison, Iowa; 15 grandchildren: Christina (Robinson) Hicky, Rick Robinson, Melannie (Funk) Trees and husband Brad, Andrea (Funk) Moulds and husband Danny, Matthew Funk, Jeremy Snell, Jonathan Snell, Joshua Snell, Gregory Blunk, Brandon Krapfl, Kayl Krapfl, Austin Thul, Taylor Thul, Blake Thul, Ali Thul, 6 great grandchildren; one brother, David Krapfl of Edgewood, Iowa, sister-in-law, Louella Krapfl of Edgewood, Iowa, sister-in-law Jean Schmitt of Rickardsville, Iowa and brother-in-law Louis Oertell of Potosi, Wisconsin, other relatives and friends. Those preceding Karl in death include his parents, Otto and Regina Krapfl, one sister Helen and husband Ray Urbain, one brother Donald Krapfl, one sister-in-law Annie Krapfl, brothers-in-law Sylvester Schmitt, Clarence and wife Maxine Oertell, brother-in-law Ray and wife Gayle Oertell and son-in-law Robert Robinson.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 10, 2014, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Denison, Iowa, with Father Paul Kelly as Celebrant. Others participating in the mass included Servers: Austin Freese and Logan Dahm; Lectors: Melannie Trees and Andrea Moulds; Gift Bearers: Blake Thul and Alicia Thul and Eucharistic Ministers: Rob and Sharon Claypool and Dianne Bruck. Music for the mass was provided by the St. Rose of Lima Adult Choir singing “Here I Am Lord”, “Prayer of St. Francis”, “On Eagle’s Wings”, and “Be Not Afraid” with Jean Cornelius as accompanist. Honorary Pallbearers were Austin Thul, Taylor Thul, Blake Thul, Alicia Thul, Gregory Blunk, Rick Robinson, and Christina Hickey. Pallbearers were Brad Trees, Danny Moulds, John Snell, Joshua Snell, Matthew Funk and Jeremy Snell. Interment was at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery, Denison Iowa. Following the graveside rites and burial the family invited everyone to join them at the St. Rose Parish Center for fellowship and a luncheon. A visitation was held from 9:00 a.m. until time of service with a Legion of Mary Rosary at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church on Friday, January 10, 2014.
