She spent the first 20 years of her life in Glasgow where she graduated from high school in 1941. During World War II she met Wallace Bergren and, as a war bride, came to the United States in 1946. Wallace and Katherine were united in marriage June 5, 1946, at St. Barbara’s Church in Brookfield, Illinois. Their union was blessed with three children: Cosette, Scott and Heather. They made their home on the farm north of Kiron, Iowa, where Katherine was a busy farmwife and homemaker lovingly caring for her family. Following Wallace’s retirement from farming in 1977, they remained on the farm until moving into Kiron in 1991. Wallace died January 13, 1998, and Katherine continued to reside in her home in Kiron until moving to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison in April of 2013. In her leisure hours Katherine was an avid reader and supporter of the Denison and Odebolt libraries, enjoyed playing and winning card games and singing. She cherished the times spent with her family, enjoyed her cats and was a lover of chocolate. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron. Katherine died Friday evening, April 11, 2014, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 88 years, 8 months and 17 days. Including her parents, James and Margaret Carmichael, and her husband, Wallace Nelson Bergren, Katherine was also preceded in death by one brother, John Carmichael and two sisters, Jean Brantmeier Berard and Eunice Tinney. Those remaining to cherish her memory include her children: Cosette and husband Tom Winter of Bannockburn, Illinois, Scott and wife Nora Bergren of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Heather and husband Allen Reimers of Kiron, Iowa; grandchildren: Susan and husband Russell Khater of Joliet, Illinois, Jennifer and husband Blake Sallé and Amanda and husband Charles Greenberg all of Austin, Texas, Emily Bergren of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Heath and wife Audrey Reimers of Waterloo, Iowa and AJ Reimers and fiancé Karalee Olsen of Central City, Iowa; great grandchildren: Alex, Julia, Cameron, Skylar, Cole, Corrine, Amelia, and Maverick; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 14, 2014, at Bethel Lutheran Church, Kiron, Iowa, with the Rev. Trish Underberg officiating. Music for the service included two congregational hymns, “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “In The Garden” and a recorded bagpipe selection of “Amazing Grace”. Margaret Ann Buller served as organist. Katherine’s family served as pallbearers. Interment was at the Kiron Cemetery, Kiron, Iowa. Following the interment all were invited to return to the church and join the family for fellowship and refreshments.
