Kathryn Jean Young was born on May 1, 1958 in Nebraska City, Ne, to Chesley Thompson and Corene Jarrett. She attended Sunnyside District 12 Country School through 8th grade and then she attended Nebraska City high school, graduating with the class of 1976. She worked various jobs through high school and after graduation, including working at Saint Mary's Hospital where she was able to gain medical experience that would later inspire her in life. She moved to Lincoln, Ne for school, and eventually moved back to Nebraska City where she worked at the Meter Plant.

In 1990, Kathy met her husband Larry in Ralston, NE at Bushwacker's. On October 12, 1991 they were married at Coryell Park in Brock, NE, and in May 1992 they welcomed daughter Chelsea into the world. In 1995, the family moved up to the Young family farm in Hancock, IA where Kathy held various jobs before deciding to go back to school. She attended Iowa Western Community College where she graduated in 2004 with a degree in Medical Assistance. She then worked at UNMC for a few years before moving on to different jobs.

Kathy was an avid reader and loved her animals, both qualities she passed to her daughter as she grew up. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, making frequent trips to Nebraska City to see her sister Pam Starner. On the farm, she was always ready to patch her father-in-law Mox up whenever there was a cut or scrape, putting her medical skills to use.

In 2018, Kathy began her battle with early-on-set dementia after a surgery and by 2022, it had progressed into Alzheimer's. On Saturday, September 10, 2022, Kathy passed away surrounded by her loved ones at home in Hancock having attained the age of 64 years, 4 months, and 10 days. She is preceded in death by her parents Chesley Thompson and Corene Huss.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Larry Young of Hancock; daughter Chelsea Young of Hancock; sister Pam (Bill) Starner of Nebraska City, brother Butch Thompson of Nebraska City; nieces and nephews, and many friends
